Ladies Auto Know…Should I Replace or Repair My Car?

Whether it’s a battery, fuel pump, new spark plugs or even a transmission repair, that periodic repair is bill is usually just a drop in the bucket compared to monthly payments on a brand new car. When your car is still running efficiently, paid for and needs only the routine maintenance, it is that time I refer to as the “Cinderella Era”.

A few large repair bills in a year or even one or two large ones can really make you think it is time to get rid of that “clunker”. But is it? There are many factors you should consider. It is almost always less expensive to repair a car than buy a new one.

Here’s a good way to put things into perspective, mathematically. Total your repair bills for the last year or two. Then divide that figure by the number of months. If that amount per month is more than half of new car payments, it may be time to replace it. Remember though, you can’t include oil changes, tires and other regular maintenance items into that figure since you will have similar expenses on the new whip. The actual numbers are less important than the overriding message. Those loan payments stack the deck against a new car. You could encounter much higher repair costs than expected and still come out ahead by keeping the old one. A typical car payment of $450/month adds up to more than $1,300 in just three short months. Doesn’t it make more sense to put that toward the car you currently own?

All that being said, if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you. Always stay on top of routine maintenance and don’t put off big repairs for too long.
