Ladies Auto Know…Rainy Weather Car Care

ccc_rainyA rainy day may be refreshing, but have you ever given thought to how you should take care of your vehicle when a sudden downpour hits? Special care is essential, as a car is more likely to break down during heavy rain and the lifetime of your vehicle is highly dependent upon preventative maintenance. Read on for helpful information every lady (and even you men out there) should know!

  • Bald tires:   A dangerous sign of neglected vehicle maintenance, thin tire treads create hazardous driving conditions when water builds up on the roadway. Deep tread accommodates accumulated water. Thin tread doesn’t, causing you to hydroplane.
  • Worn Wiper Blades:  Rainy weather also affects driver visibility. Did you know that 90% of our driving decisions depend on good vision? Then you should know a CLEAN windshield is important. Worn wiper blades cause streaking and smearing. This is an easy and low-cost fix, and better to do before the monsoon hits.
  • Battery:  Excessive use of headlights, defroster and wiper blades use up much of the battery, so make sure yours is up to standard.
  • Brakes:   On wet roads, a car that stops well is MUCH safer than a car that goes well. Signs you need new brakes: pulling to one side when applying the brakes; sponginess (when the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor); grinding/growling/squealing; and vibrations or pulsations when you hit the brakes.
  • Tire Pressure:   Keep your tires properly inflated. Vehicle manufacturers put the correct air pressure on the door edge of your vehicle, the glove box or the fuel door. It’s also listed in the owner’s manual. Still not sure? Stop by Linear and we can double check it for you, no problem. (NOTE: The number listed on the side of the tire is the MAXIMUM air pressure, not the recommended)

Driving in the rain can be dangerous; in fact thousands of car accidents each year are caused by wet driving conditions. I’m not saying you NEED these, but it BMW3_play_thru_20wouldn’t hurt to read the safety tips below from www.carcare.org on slick street driving.

  • When driving on the freeway, drive in the center lanes as water tends to pool in the outside lanes.
  • Turn on your headlights! It will help you see better on foggy or rainy days and it will help other drivers see you!
  • Increase your following distance and watch for brake lights ahead.
  • Slow down – it takes longer to stop in wet weather. Plus the faster you drive, the greater the chances of hydroplaning!
  • Drive slowly through any puddle of uncertain depth. That way if it’s deeper than you thought, you can still back out!
  • Never drive through moving water if you can’t see the ground through it. You could be swept right off the road!
