What to Keep:

  • An MP3 player to cut down on the number of CD’s.
  • An emergency kit that contains emergency items such as: battery-operated electronic safety flare, portable jump-starter, tire sealant, flashlight, batteries, bottled water, nonperishable food, blanket, rain poncho and first aid kit.
  • An umbrella
  • Glove box essentials like the owner’s manual, insurance, registration, maps
  • A few activity books to keep the kiddos busy

What to Eliminate:

  • Toys with loose or small parts (which tend to get lost under the seats)
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Seasonal gear–you won’t be needing the arm floaties and beach towels until summer
  • Any miscellaneous items that you haven’t used in three months

How to Maintain:

  • Institute a “one only” rule with your kids; Whenever they get in the car they are allowed to bring only one toy; make sure they take it with them when they get home, too!
  • If your trunk comes with a cargo net, use it to contan groceries, kids’ sports equipment or other items.
  • Stow a can of moist wipes in a cupholder for quick cleanups
  • Keep a “go box” (any large container will do, even a big tote) in the front closet of your home and fill it with items you’ll need for the day ahead–DVD rentals to to return, clothes for the cleaners. Grab it as you head to the car. At the end of the day, put accumulated items BACK in the go box to take indoors.
  • Stash a few plastic bags for daily trash collection.
  • Keep a portable handheld vacuum in the trunk to quick-clean crumbs and dirt on seats and floor
  • Check your owner’s manual for hidden compartments. You may have more storage options than you think.
